Some people think having a train track near their house is an annoyance, but for me it’s a great pleasure. I love hearing the train whistle give three blasts at predictable times of the day, and it somehow comforts me to hear the rumble along the tracks as the train goes by. Last night I was lying awake (I sleep on a futon), and heard a train. I imagined where it might be going and who might be on it. I had to get up for work at 6 o’clock in the morning because I work at a home improvement store and I have to move all the gas grills out to the front because we are having a 25%-off sale, but the train didn’t keep me awake; if anything, the sound of the wheels clicking across the tracks put me to sleep. It is, of course, a little annoying when a train is going by and it blocks the Louisa Street crossing so I can’t get home. Then again, unless the train is very long or I’m in a very big hurry, I find even this a pleasure. I watch the boxcars go by and imagine what’s in them. It’s even fun to read the graffiti on the sides of the cars.
