General Safety Rules:

1. Follow all instructions!

2. Never perform activities without the approval and supervision of the teacher.

3. Absolutely no horseplay!

4. Do not eat or drink in the laboratory.

5. Keep works areas clean and free of papers.

6. Wear appropriate clothing. No open-toed shoes or loose clothing.

 

Animal and Plant Safety:

1. Do not perform experiments that cause harm or pain to animals.

2. Inform your teacher of any allergies to plants, molds or animals before doing an activity.

3. Wash your hands after handling animals, animal parts, plants, plant parts or soil.

 

Heating and Fire Safety:

1. Keep all combustible materials away from flames.

2. Do not heat substances in a closed container.

3. Use an oven mitt to pick up a container that has been heated. 

 

Glassware Safety:

1.Do not use chipped or broken glassware.

2. Never handle broken glassware with your bare hands. Hot and cold glass looks the same!

3. Use tongs or clamps to handle heated glassware.

4. Never point a test tube toward yourself or another person.

5. Keep works areas clean and free of papers.

 

Using Sharp Instruments:

1. Handle sharp instruments with care.

2. Never cut material towards you; cut away from you.

 

First Aid:

1. Report all accidents to your teacher, no matter how small or minor you think it is.

2. Know where these are located: A.First-Aid Kit, B. Fire Extinguisher, C. Fire Blanket, D. Eye Wash Station, F. Emergency Shower.

 

Chemical Safety:

1. Do not directly inhale chemicals. Waft them gently under your nose.

2. Never touch, taste or smell chemicals unless a teacher tells you to.

3. Use only the chemicals needed..

4. Dispose of chemical as instructed by your teacher.

5. When mixing acids and bases, always pour the acid into the water. Do not pour water into an acid.

6. Wash chemical spills with plenty of water.

7. Keep all containers closed when not being used

 

After The Experiment:

1. Clean up your work area.

2. Unplug all electrical appliances.

3. Dispose of wastes as instructed by your teacher.

4. Wash your hands after every experiment.
